The AGM 2013

AGM 2013:  26, 27 & 28th April 2013

A most successful AGM was held in Chelmsford and fuller reports will appear in due course and in QSO.  In the meantime here are a couple of photos to keep you going.  The event was very well attended with a record equalling 40 attending the Saturday morning AGM, 41 travelling to the most interesting Sandford Mill Museuem in the Afternoon and 56 sitting down to dinner including 12 ladies.  It was most encouraging to welcome 9 new members, or first time attendees.  It is our intention to return to Chelmsford over the last weekend in April 2014.

The only note of sadness was the loss of our dear colleague Charles Shelton on the night before we all arrived on the Friday.  Charles had been greatly looking forward to ‘hosting’ the AGM in his home town and had been in regular contact with members until shortly before his death.  There are tributes to Charles elsewhere on the website and we honoured his loss, and that of other members, with a one minute silence before the AGM commenced.

Update 18th April 2013

All the bookings are in and it looks like we are heading for a very well attended AGM.  We have to all intents and purposes filled the hotel and the numbers are slightly higher than last year for the AGM itself and almost exactly the same for the Saturday dinner.  We look forward to seeing everyone in Chelmsford next week.

Update 16th March 2013:

Bookings are rolling in nicely and Secretary Jim Loughlin advises me we are slightly ahead of normal at this stage in the cycle.  We aren’t yet at the stage of advising members that “if you do not book you might not get in,” however, there is a feeling that we are going to break attendance records this year.  We have a contractual commitment to advise the hotel of our numbers in early April and there is a danger that if you leave it later than that you might not get in to either the hotel or the room capacity for the AGM and dinner might be exceeded.  We have never been in this position before but there is just a possibility we might be this year.  In short, if you are thinking of coming to the AGM get your booking form in to Jim asap.

AGM details:

The 2013 Annual General Meeting of The Radio Officers’ Association will be held in Chelmsford, Essex on Friday and Saturday the 26th and 27th April.  The venue will be the Best Western Atlantic Hotel, New Street, Chelmsford CM1 1PP. The telephone number is 01245 268 168. Travel instructions to reach the hotel by road, rail and air are shown below. The afternoon trip will be to the excellent museum at Sandford Mill and this will coincide with International Marconi Day and there could well be a gathering of R/O’s who, God forbid, are not even members.  More details will be published in due course.

Due to some excellent work by Ian Channing we have found a good hotel in the South East of England.  We have wanted to hold an AGM in this area for some years but have been rather frightened off by high hotel prices. The fact that we have a location in Chelmsford, which will have many memories for former Marconi Marine employees and also the hotel’s proximity to an excellent museum should make this an AGM to look forward to.  Statistically nearly 50% of our members live South of the M4 and in the home counties and we hope this will bring in some members who do not normally attend our annual jamboree.  Why not come along this year, I can almost guarantee you will enjoy it.

2nd March 2013: A Message from Hon. Secretary, Jim Loughlin.

The Association is contracted to provide the final numbers (both accommodation and AGM attendance) 21 days prior to the event and you will find the final date for submission on the booking form on the back page of the current QSO. For those who attended last year can I remind you to bring your lapel badge with you. I would be very grateful for a prompt response for those wishing to attend.

Whether you attend or not I do need any agenda items or other information that you would wish to be considered to be forwarded to me. Specifically there is a need to address the following areas of the Association’s business: the re-election of officers (any other nominations for these or other posts?), matters for discussion and resolutions.

I will prepare the agenda papers two weeks prior to the date and as such I need any items for inclusion by 12th April at the latest. The minutes of the last AGM were published in QSO and it would be helpful if attendees bring their copy with them to the meeting.

Travel information for the Annual General Meeting 2013

By Car from the M25

Leave the M25 at Junction 28 and descend to the roundabout. If coming from the North, take the first exit (slip road), if coming from the South take the third exit (marked A12 Harwich and Felixstowe). Proceed along the A12 for approximately ten miles then leave at Junction 15 marked A414 Harlow and Chelmsford. Go straight across the roundabout and take the road marked London Road. At the next roundabout take the second exit marked Town Centre A1114. At the next roundabout take the second exit marked Town Centre. At the next roundabout (Miami Roundabout) take second exit marked Maldon. Proceed along Princes Road, passing a Lidl supermarket on the right, proceed straight across mini roundabout. At the next roundabout (Army and Navy) take first exit marked Town Centre A1060. At next roundabout (Odeon roundabout) take third exit marked Meadows Retail Park. Proceed over Highbridge Road and at the next roundabout (in front of Tesco supermarket) take the third exit. Pass through the pelican crossing and proceed to the traffic lights. Turn left at the traffic lights into Victoria Road and proceed through the pedestrian crossing. At the next set of traffic lights (police station on your left) turn right into New Street. Proceed under the railway bridge and take the next right turn into Brook Street (car wash on corner of Brook Street), The Atlantic Hotel carpark is on the left in a small cul-de-sac and is clearly marked from the road. If you miss Brook Street proceed 200 yards up New Street where there is a roundabout to enable a second attempt.

Trains for Chelmsford leave from London Liverpool Station and there are four services an hour. The journey time is 35-40 minutes. Due to ongoing engineering works it is possible that on the Sunday there will be a replacement bus service from Chelmsford Station either to Billericay or Wickford where passengers can get a train to Liverpool Street. The bus journey is around 25 minutes.

Leave the station by the rear exit (if you can see a pub called the Railway Tavern you have come out the wrong side). Cross the car park and exit into Victoria Road North. Turn left and walk approximately 200 yards, passing the YMCA on the left. At the junction turn left and walk a further 200 yards under the railway viaduct. The Atlantic Hotel is then on your right across the road, next to a car wash.

Chelmsford is approximately 25 miles from London Stansted Airport which has flights from most major UK cities. A high speed coach service (the X30 Aircoach) links Stansted to Chelmsford Bus Station. This service runs approximately once an hour during the day at a cost of £9 each way and £13.50 return off peak. The journey time is around thirty minutes. There is an hourly slow steaming normal bus service (42A) that takes about an hour and appears to cost the same price. Senior Bus Passes can be used on this service.

On arrival leave the Bus Station, walk under the railway viaduct and turn left into Victoria Road North. From then on follow the instructions for arriving by rail.

  1. Excellent AGM weekend again. They seem to get better every year. Congratulations to all the organisers
for a job well done. Since Tony S doubted by duel nationality I will produce 2 passports next year.
Just one complaint I must make. The return bus driver from Chelmsford to Stanstead Airport would not accept my Seniors Bus Pass so I informed him I would be voting for Independence next year at the referendum and stopping the deliveries of North Sea Oil for his bus thereby putting him out of a job!!.
Keep up the good work lads. Looking forward to next year.
    Best regards, Joe Duffy.
