Graham Mercer GPK GM4BES now Silent Key

26 May

I was devastated to learn today that Graham is now Silent Key.

He died a fortnight ago unexpectedly during heart surgery.

Pat, his widow, told me that he was cheerful and joking as he went to theatre,

a true measure of the man.

We have been friends for years – many hours were spent chatting on Cardigan Bay Radio Ch03 and also via landline (thanks BT!).

My Oceanspan VII Tx & Mercury Rx were used to say goodbye to GPK on 500kHz, a very special moment with Graham on the key at the other end.

A true friend and a gentleman of the ether.

I treasure his memory and the visits to GPK to meet him face to face.

I am sure many ROA members will have wkd him on the key at GPK.

  1. I am saddened to learn of Graham’s death. I knew Graham during the late 1960s in Aberdeen where he was working . We had a common interest in Marine Radio and would enjoy discussion on that subject. I well remember on my stop-overs at Aberdeen, being in the company of this interesting friendly and genial man. As we were still on the threshold of pursuing our respective careers, it was inevitable we would sadly loose touch. Despit the short and intermittent nature of our meet-ups the personality and character of Graham is fondly rememberd and recalled decades later. I extend my sympathy to Pat, his family and friends.
