Annual Reunion and Annual General Meeting: Liverpool 23rd and 24th April 2019

Annual reunion and Annual General Meeting: Liverpool: 23rd & 24thApril 2019

by Tony Selman

The venue is The Liner Hotel, Lord Nelson Street, Liverpool L3 5QB. Tel: 0151 709 7050 and members who have not visited will be delighted to know that the whole hotel is themed on major passenger vessels that sailed from Liverpool. Reception is the Pursers Desk, all wooden doors have portholes, nautical prints all over the place and the rooms are cabins!  All meeting rooms etc. are named after predominantly Cunard Liners.  We will have the Tuesday buffet and post AGM lunch in the Pacific Lounge and the formal dinner will be in The Brittanic Suite. We have tended not to use city centre hotels over the years because they cost more and parking and access are always a problem.  That is not the case this time round for our second midweek reunion.  The hotel is immediately adjacent to Liverpool Lime Street station (be aware of a quite steep walk uphill for about 50 yards to the hotel), which is, of course, a main line station and it has a feeder service from Liverpool airport.  Another bonus is that the hotel provides free parking at a large secure car park immediately adjacent to the hotel. The hotel hosts many similar reunions with Clan Line and RFA being amongst them.

We will follow the usual prescription by gathering on the Tuesday afternoon at the hotel and meet for a couple of throat fresheners in the bar about 18.30, substantially before this time for some members who have come off watch early. Following recent first night successes there will be a buffet on the Tuesday evening at 19.30.  Note: NO menu choice required. The Tuesday evening session has been somewhat prolonged in the past and it is to be hoped that members are in good training. Wives are most welcome and they seem to enjoy it as numbers increase every reunion. The ladies quite often do their own thing on the Wednesday and a wide range of options are available in Liverpool itself. This will be the first reunion where we have not organised a formal event after the AGM lunch.  We have been to Liverpool so many times that we have run out of places to visit, we have even been to some twice.  We did consider the U Boat plus Spaceport on the other side of the Mersey and this is an option for 2020.  We are sending scouting parties this time round.   There are, of course, many things to see in such a diverse city, for example, the Maritime Museum, the excellent Western Approaches Museum and for the more culturally inclined The Walker Art Gallery are all within reasonable walking distance. On the Wednesday evening the main reunion dinner takes place where the rig of the day is gentlemen in suits and ties (ROA hopefully) and the ladies in their finery.  Please note on the booking form a menu choice is required from members attending. We disperse homewards on Thursday morning.  For members who wish to arrive early or leave late the hotel will honour the ROA special room rate.  I do hope new members considering attending will do so because I can guaranteeyou will enjoy the event.
