Annual reunion and Annual General Meeting: Liverpool: NEW DATE MONDAY 16TH TO 18TH NOVEMBER 2020.
by Tony Selman
We are returning this year to The Liner Hotel, Lord Nelson Street, Liverpool L3 5QB. Tel: 0151 709 7050. This venue was very popular last year and the hotel looked after us very well. Members who have not visited will be delighted to know that the whole hotel is themed on major passenger vessels that sailed from Liverpool. Reception is the Pursers Desk, all wooden doors have portholes, nautical prints all over the place and the rooms are cabins! All meeting rooms etc. are named after predominantly Cunard Liners. The hotel is immediately adjacent to Liverpool Lime Street station (be aware of a quite steep walk uphill for about 100 yards to the hotel), which is, of course, a main line station and it has a feeder service from Liverpool airport. Another bonus is that the hotel provides free parking at a large secure car park immediately adjacent to the hotel.
We will follow the usual prescription by gathering on the Monday afternoon at the hotel and meet for a couple of throat fresheners in the bar about 18.30, substantially before this time for some members who have come off watch early. Following recent first night successes there will be a buffet on the Monday evening at 19.30. Note: NO menu choice required. Wives are most welcome and they seem to enjoy it as numbers increase every reunion. The ladies quite often do their own thing on the Wednesday and a wide range of options are available in Liverpool itself.
The AGM will commence at 09.00. There will be a slightly unusual format for the Tuesday afternoon visit. Willie Williamson has arranged an afternoon visit and tour to The Athenaeum Club in Liverpool where he is a member (walking distance or short cab ride). This will be very interesting. However, they can only take a tour of 30 members. The bookings will be on a first come first served basis, therefore the first 30 bookings indicating they would like to visit The Athenaeum will join the tour in 2020. The balance of people wanting an afternoon visit will take public transport or a taxi to the Pier Head then a ferry across the Mersey to Seacombe and then on to Birkenhead Woodside where you will disembark and visit the U Boat at the Woodside ferry stage. Return by Woodside ferry for the return crossing to the Pier Head, alternatively take the short walk to Hamilton Square station and Merseyrail train to Lime Street and short walk back to the hotel. This process will be reversed in 2021, ie, if you take the Athenaeum tour in 2020 you will take the U Boat tour in 2021. Please indicate on the form which visit you prefer to do in 2020. On the Tuesday evening the main reunion dinner takes place where the rig of the day is gentlemen in suits and ties (ROA hopefully) and the ladies in their finery. Please note on the booking form a menu choice is required from members attending.
We disperse homewards on Wednesday morning. For members who wish to arrive early or leave late the hotel will honour the ROA special room rate. If extra nights are required please book through the ROA and not direct with the hotel to guarantee special prices. I do hope members who have not attended before will consider joining us this year because I can guarantee you will enjoy the event.
